Description of Service

The Complex Cancer Clinic (CCC) at St Mark’s Hospital is a specialist service dedicated to the assessment and surgical management of patients with recurrent and advanced pelvic and colorectal cancers. The service is led by two Consultant Colorectal Surgeons: Mr JT Jenkins, Ms E Burns and Mr A Antoniou, working closely with dedicated Consultant urological, orthopaedic, gynaecological, vascular and plastic surgeons. The service is supported by a multi-disciplinary team that includes specialist radiologists, specialist nurses and other health care professionals who offer a comprehensive approach to patient care.

The role of the team is to assess patients for their suitability for surgery; plan and deliver appropriate surgical management; promote and sustain recovery and offer a personalised pathway of care for each patient until they are well enough to be referred back to their local team.

The pathway for this service is as follows:

  • Referral to the Complex Cancer Clinic multidisciplinary team (MDT)
  • MDT assessment of suitability for surgery
  • Attendance at CCC for formal clinical assessment
  • Remote pre-assessment
  • Elective Admission for Surgery
  • Surgical Procedure
  • Recovery
  • Carefully planned discharge
  • Stratified protocolised follow-up
  • Discharge to referring team

What is a complex colorectal cancer?

Complex cancers include four different groups:

  • Locally advanced rectal cancers – those extending beyond the standard rectal anatomical plane
  • Locally recurrent rectal or extensive recurrent anal cancers
  • Colorectal cancers with spread inside the abdominal cavity (colorectal peritoneal metastases)
  • Other cancers including neuroendocrine tumours and locally advanced anal and colon cancers and other rarer pelvic masses

Hours of Service

CCC clinics run every Friday in St Mark’s Outpatients, Level 3, St Mark’s Hospital. There is a weekly CCC MDT meeting.
