Macmillan Colorectal Cancer Nursing Team

Description of service

Macmillan nurses are specialist nurses who work in different areas of cancer care and treatment. They work in hospitals, hospices, and in the community.

Macmillan nurses can help with information about your cancer diagnosis, and treatment, and help manage side effects. They offer emotional and practical support. They can also tell you about other support available. This may include information about social care, benefits advice, and local support groups.

The Macmillan Colorectal Team at St Mark’s offers the following services to all colorectal cancer patients:

  • Support at diagnosis and provision of written information
  • Support with surgical and oncological treatment planning
  • Emotional and psychological support
  • Help with applying for grants and benefits
  • Symptom control
  • Referral to the Community Macmillan Services and other appropriate healthcare professionals (the Stoma Care Team, Dietitians, the Chemotherapy Team, and Psycho-oncology team)
  • Bowel management after rectal cancer treatment
  • Advice regarding local support groups and counselling services
  • We offer 3 monthly virtual colorectal Health and Wellbeing Events to patients who have completed their treatment
  • Holistic Need Assessment and Provision of Cancer Treatment Summary
  • Running Nurse-Led Clinics to monitor Colorectal Cancer Surveillance

Our motto is: No One Should Face Cancer Alone

Patient Voices

“Sarah has been a knight in shining armour for us. From the day I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, Sarah has smoothly guided us through this journey without any stress. Her advice and encouragement helped us make the right decision. She has been very kind, understanding and easy to get in touch with. Very helpful at all times.”

“I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2013 and met Manju then. She has been my Macmillan Nurse and has given me a lot of support and help. Manju is very professional, kind and dedicated and shows a lot of understanding and has a caring approach. I value everything she has done for me and honestly believe I would not have been able to fight my battle with cancer without her help. Manju, the NHS needs more nurses like you!”
