Pelvic floor surgery at St Mark’s Hospital

The Sir Alan Parks’ Physiology Department is a specialist unit which is dedicated to the management of patients with pelvic floor disorders. These include faecal incontinence, constipation, rectal prolapse, anal pain and obstetric injuries. Alongside the provision of a service to its local patient population, the department manages tertiary referrals from other hospitals, Nationally and Internationally, for complex pelvic floor disorders.

The department is led by Miss Carolynne Vaizey, Mr Gregory Thomas, Mr Janindra Warusavitarne, and Dr Gehanjali Amarasinghe and supported by Mr Alex Leo. The multi-disciplinary team includes the Biofeedback department, Clinical Physiologists, Consultant Radiologists, a Plastic Surgeon and Urogynaecologist.

The aim is to provide a pathway of care which is specific to each patient’s needs.  Patients may be offered a wide range of investigations including anorectal physiology testing, endoanal and pelvic floor ultrasound, defecating proctography, and MRI.

A full complement of medical treatment options may be offered alongside biofeedback, dietary advice and psychological support. The department offers a complete range of pelvic floor surgical procedures. These include sacral nerve stimulation, anal sphincter repair, perineal reconstruction, keyhole and perineal rectal prolapse surgery, anal sphincter bulking agents and stoma.

The department has a very active research and teaching profile. This has generated a large number of peer reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences. Teaching courses in the management of pelvic floor disorders are run throughout the year.
